Premiere: GABRIEL Debuts Stormy Video For Bellowing Single “What A Shame”

New to our ears today is the first single from a new act in Richmond: the four-piece hard rock group known as GABRIEL. Showcasing classic hard rock swells and sleek modern production, the emerging band’s debut single, “What A Shame,” is a strong introduction into the local scene, which is only further amplified by its dusky and assertive music video. The Auricular is proud to premiere this music video from the nascent rock act, which you can view at the bottom of this article.

Recorded at Red Amp Studio, the thundering song features an intriguing dynamic balance that feels like an early hallmark of GABRIEL’s sound. Clean, potent vocals stream out of singer Phil Walker, setting a goalpost for the song that the cagey and dextrous guitar work from Gabriel Metzger easily matches, while the rhythm section of Keith Horne (bass) and Jody Boyd (drums) push forward with a steady and relentless beat.

It’a a deliberate and blustering track built on a foundation of blues-driven hard rock and written by Metzger, the band’s songwriter, alongside producer Joe Kaltenbach in light of all that divides us shortly after COVID-19 descended onto our world.

“[The song] breaks down the walls that keep us from truly connecting,” Metzer stated in a recent press release. “I hope people will hear this song and realize that at the end of the day we are all the same. We all want to be heard, we all want to be accepted and we all want to be loved.”

The video, which Kaltenbach also directed, finds the band navigating a dark and uncertain scene with the fiery passion needed to perserve. “The video is a powerful message to try to learn from and appreciate our differences,” stated producer & director Joe Kaltenbach. “After all, ‘What good are skin and bones if you’ve got no soul?’

“What A Shame” is the first in a trio of announced singles right now with “Fall Apart” coming later in 2020 and “Not Meant To Be” following at the beginning of the year.
