Jonny Loe Tunes Out The World To Tune In On “Misfit”
Sometimes, it would be nice just to hit pause. Stop the world while you chase a goal to the end, or halt your own momentum to savor time with the people who matter most. But this isn’t fantasy. It’s real life, and real life demands hard choices. For many, that means shutting out internal and external distractions, personal and outlying, to stay focused, even if it means becoming an outcast in the process. That’s the core sentiment of “Misfit,” the latest single from Richmond hip-hop artist Jon Prince, aka Jonny Loe, and its accompanying music video, the third entry in the Off Campus series for 2025.
Shot by the Cam Culture Media team, the video finds the MC getting raw encouragement from two cohorts on an early morning tennis court at Virginia State University. Fired up, he steps to the mic, still flanked by his compadres, and locks into a pushy yet fluid flow. “Fuck the drama\ I’ve been focused\ On this money\ Cash gettin’,” he declares, pushing aside the noise and zeroing in on the prize. A low drum beat thumps underneath a warm piano flourish, which appears intermittently but colors the track, produced with style from Dee b Yung XI and Dave Hall. “My shorty mad at me\ She told me, ‘boy, got focus on yourself’,” he confesses, revealing the tough love that fuels his drive. Her words echo the track’s determined tone, reinforcing his choice to stay locked in: focused, isolated, and unwilling to be derailed by emotional distractions.
“Misfit” comes with the single “Lovato” on the recent dual-sided single Retrospect II, a sequel to his debut dual-sided single Retrospect, released last December, featuring “Rubicon” and “Tell Me.” In between, the Richmond artist dropped the standalone singles “Sincere” and “Turn Up,” an impressive run of releases in a short time period that suggests there’s a stockpile of unreleased material waiting in the wings. If “Misfit” is any indication, it’ll arrive with the same declarative self-worth and laser-sharp focus.
