It’s hard to put into words what RVA Rap Elite really is. It’s vibrant and dazzling, but also empowering and philanthropic. As much as it stands as a testament to Richmond’s thriving hip-hop scene, it also speaks to the sense of community which great music can really bring to a city. Like we said, it’s really hard to put all of it down into a single article… so thankfully, the wonderful team at HearRVA put out a video that lets us know exactly what a RVA Rap Elite showcase looks like.
On-hand at the September 16th Open Cypher event at Tang & Biscuit, HearRVA caught performances from the heaps of skilled MCs aiming to take the monthly crown. Shots of Juanski, Madam V, Kulture, Cheff Tokin, C Spicy, Vintage A, Traqp, Islam Rap God, Ceo.wav, Rel Lyfe, and the eventual champion of the night Tre’ Awthenticc all come to life in the video, while the voices of the organizers relay the spirt and importance of the organization.
“The purpose of Rap Elite is to provide a platform for not only artists in the city, but specifically MC’s [and] lyricists,” founder and organizer Radio B stated to HearRVA in the video. “We’re really about the craft, the bars, the culture.”
That spirit is on display in HearRVA’s visual coverage as they captured MC’s not only performing, but also interacting with their peers and supporting them as they got their turn with the live mic. The video also dove more into what makes RVA Rap Elite tick with talking heads from DJ B-Rice and HearRVA’s own Elijah Hedrick (eliturite), both of whom have been long-standing supporters and organizers of the monthly showcase. “Everybody’s rooting for each other and I think that’s important,” Elijah Hedrick stated, highlighting the welcoming spirit that runs through this otherwise competitive event.
