Slumdogg Twitches A Convulsive Beat In “Bodies”

 In News

This past April, imposing MC Slumdogg released his latest mixtape, Music I Fuck With 2 aka M.I.F.W. 2, with eleven tracks that further establish his grimy and bombastic style. Featuring visceral grooves and weighty lyrics, it was a bold release for Renaissance Recordings, who retained an exclusive stream early on until the record was released to all streaming platforms in mid-May. Before either release though, the rapper released an early taste of the mixtape’s compelling sound with a video for the looping, punctuated track “Bodies.”

Short but effective, “Bodies” is one of the stand-out tracks from the new mixtape, with a looping beat that finds itself hung on the titular word just like a needle gets stuck on a dusty groove. In the video, Slumdogg leans into the title of the song, offering macabre visuals of possession and convulsion as he rolls through the beat, punctuating each utterance of “bodies” as if it controls the bodily spasms of his crew. Shot on a platform with the river city skyline in the backdrop, it’s a striking video that also features some eerie close-up shots which fans of a certain squared circle phenom might enjoy.

Like all songs on Music I Fuck With 2, the song was produced by Akai Phifer, who helped craft an underground aesthetic for the record, but one that’s still polished and stylish. That musical diligence helps make this mixtape a rightful sequel to Slumdogg’s notable 2020 mixtape. Moreover, it helps to continue raising the game of this talented MC, something that’s apparent even in the mixtape’s shorter, punchier moments, like “Bodies.”
